Art,Mindfulness and Motivation: My Journey from Depression to Empowerment

Art hasn’t always been a part of my life. I honestly never realized just how powerful it could be until 2018. That year, I was going through a really tough time. A painful breakup had left me drowning in sadness, and depression had taken hold of me.

One day, my mom suggested we go to a local paint and sip event for Mother's Day. I figured it might be a good distraction from the constant sadness I was feeling. Little did I know, that seemingly ordinary event would change my life.

As I painted, something incredible happened. For the first time in a long while, my mind went quiet. All those racing thoughts and feelings of self-doubt seemed to fade away as I focused on my brush gliding across the canvas.

Painting became my escape, my therapy. It demanded my full attention, pulling me into a state of mindfulness. In those moments, I was free from the weight of depression. The colors I chose and the strokes I made were like a visual diary of my healing journey.

I kept painting, day after day. It became my lifeline, helping me find purpose and self-worth again. Each finished painting was a small victory, a sign that I could overcome the darkness.

Over time, my depression loosened its grip. Art had transformed me, making me more focused, creative, and motivated. It gave me strength when I needed it most. In these moments, creating art became my refuge, a place where I could get lost in the process. Each brushstroke or pencil mark allowed me to escape the turmoil in my mind and simply exist in the present. It wasn't about judgment or being a skilled artist; it was about feeling the emotions, raw and unfiltered, and releasing them onto the canvas.

I learned that art boosted my motivation in other ways as well outside of the canvas.

  1. Goal Setting: Through art, I learned to set achievable goals for myself. Whether it was completing a painting or mastering a new technique, these small milestones motivated me to keep going, not only in my art but also in other aspects of life.

  2. Sense of Accomplishment: The satisfaction of finishing an artwork, knowing that I had created something beautiful and meaningful, was a tremendous motivator. It instilled a sense of accomplishment that spilled over into my daily tasks, driving me to tackle challenges with the same determination.

  3. Mindful Focus: Art making demanded my full attention and presence. This practice of mindfulness, of being wholly absorbed in the creative process, not only made my art richer but also trained my mind to focus better on other tasks, increasing my overall motivation and productivity.

Companies are starting to see the benefits of art for mindfulness and motivation. It's not just about pretty pictures; it's about mental well-being, teamwork, and problem-solving. My journey is proof that art can transform and empower, and I want to help others experience that too.
